Doing the right thing is smart business®.

By: Taylor Lovell, National Sales Manager

It sounds so simple, so elementary… Doing the right thing is smart business. It is a mantra our parent company, Protective Life, has abided by and prospered from for over 100 years. It is a mantra that certainly applies to all of us within the broader family. And yet, it appears to be beyond the reach of so many people and business models in today’s frantic, panicked world.

Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, argues that “…there are principles that govern human effectiveness...” These principals are described in such ways as excellence, fairness, integrity, honesty, and service. Violate these truths, he suggests, and the resulting negative consequences are as sure to happen as violating the laws of gravity. Practice these truths and the resulting positive consequences are as predictable as the laws of gravity.

I have the distinct pleasure of telling the ProEquities story to advisors all over the country. It is a dream job to meet incredible people day in and day out to tell them an incredible story. Many times I catch myself expounding about life within and surrounding ProEquities, and I realize an advisor is smiling broadly. I have to laugh when they explain, “You really mean what you are saying, don’t you?” Of course I do! We really do have outstanding technology, reliable operational systems, the latest financial products and services, exceptional compliance direction, and effective marketing tools. More importantly, there is ample evidence our advisors and all those who support them strive for excellence, fairness, integrity, honesty, and a spirit of serving others, all of which, consequently, has been woven into the fabric of our firm.

During our current economic crisis, many firms have been shaken to the core and worse, failed - even some of the largest in the world. When advisors I am recruiting ask me about the future of Protective Life and ProEquities, I can confidently respond that the same principles that have literally protected our enterprise’s clients and our businesses for over 100 years including growth, serving others, integrity, a sense of fairness and others, will continue to guide us well into our future. Most assuredly, Protective Life and ProEquities will continue to evolve our business models to meet changing economic conditions and market demands; however, the bedrock of principles in which we have anchored our foundation will not waver. That differentiates you and me, and all of the people who are Protective Life and ProEquities, from many, many other firms in the world. On one hand, we are flexible and open to change; on the other hand, originating from Covey and resonating from ProEquities, “Principles are like lighthouses. They are natural laws that cannot be broken.”

Rest assured, if there is one thing you can count on from ProEquities, it is that we will continue our focus on the mantra: “Doing the right thing is smart business.” to carry all of us with success into the future.
